I don't know about the Canadian side but its not President Trump who should be issuing tariffs on the USA side. That power rests with congress. The president can use executive powers to put in place tariffs in "Emergency Situations". That's why Trump keeps saying the Canadian tariffs are because of the "Fentanyl emergency" on the northern border even though USA customs own data says that less than 0.2% of the fentanyl coming into the USA comes via Canada.Nakedtruth wrote: ↑March 11th, 2025, 7:23 pmHow come the Canadian PM is not the one adding tariffs a Premier is the one doing it.CanadianChick wrote: ↑March 11th, 2025, 5:31 pmhttps://www.ctvnews.ca/world/trumps-tar ... ates-here/
"Ontario Premier Doug Ford says U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has dropped the plan to double tariffs on Canadian aluminum and steel, and has committed to lowering U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff back down to 25 per cent.
This comes after Ontario agreed to pause a surcharge on electricity exports to the U.S., which dramatically upped the ante in Trump’s trade war with Canada Tuesday.
In a Truth Social post, the president wrote he will double the tariff on steel and aluminum, expected tomorrow, and said he will declare a “National Emergency on Electricity” in areas affected by Ontario’s 25 per cent surcharge. Later in the day, Ford said in a statement he would suspend the charge."
Doubling the tariffs seems to be off now
Everybody knows that Trump is simply trying to collapse the Canadian economy so they will want to become the 51st state but congress would NEVER approve the use of tariffs for that. So Trump is simply bypassing them by using his emergency executive powers
And there in lies the problem. Instead of getting rational tariffs that are debated and approved in congress, we are getting a barrage of tariffs direct from Trump that he puts on one day and rolls back the next. The result is chaos !!
