This is just getting crazy. First Trump announces the tariffs, then a day later said that the auto industry was exempt. Then the next day he paused tariffs on both countries for a month. Then today he is threatening new tariffs on Canada including 250% on dairy products that may start next week - https://edition.cnn.com/2025/03/07/busi ... index.html

How is any manufacturer, let alone country, supposed to keep up with all this ???
Without getting into the benefits or drawbacks of tariffs, one thing I want to say is business and especially markets like stability. I watched president Trump speak from the Oval Office today, he answered a reporter who asked about these flip flop tariff decisions by answering, some small adjustments are okay ( Or words to that affect), Not saying I agree or disagree but this makes it hard for businesses to make decisions.
Exactly. Imagine being an executive in the auto industry right now. You've got parts that may cross both the Canadian and Mexican borders 5 or 6 times before being assembled into a car. You've now got a month to invest billions of dollars moving all those factories into the USA (where they would cost twice as much to run) but next week, Trump might say he's come to an agreement with both countries and abandon the tariffs

Tariffs will work in our favor with a little bit of time, it will make companies come back and build here and help in our security, the prez is on the right track.

No it wont. The reason companies build their products in places Mexico or China is because the labor costs are much cheaper in those countries. Bring the manufacturing back to the USA and the labor costs will be double what they were before.

Whether its because of tariffs or increased labor costs, the consumer ends up paying more and that drives inflation. Any economist will tell you that. That's why most of the world abandoned tariffs over 70 years ago

Even if Trump gets big companies like Apple and TSC (Taiwan Semiconductor Company) to move their manufacturing to the USA, its not going to make a dent in the job figures. Most manufacturing these days is done by robots so even a $500 billion Apple factory will likely only employ a few thousand people.

The DOW was down nearly 1000 points today because of these tariffs !

Robots no one talks of them, you are spot on, that $500 billion or whatever numbers he throws out are for building the factories one time probably. 34ddww

i think we can drive down cost and put the jobs back in the usa! 34ddww 34ddww

Protect domestic industries: Tariffs make imported goods more expensive, which can lead to more business for domestic manufacturers.
Retaliate against unfair trade practices: Tariffs can punish foreign countries that subsidize exports or sell products at low prices.
National security: Tariffs can help protect against threats to national security.
Shoring up supply chains: Tariffs can help ensure key supply chains are secure.
Combating monopolization: Tariffs can help prevent critical imports from being monopolized

The stock markets are falling like a stone. DOW dropped around 1,400 points in just 2 days, consumer confidence is at an all time low and there is a strong likelihood that the USA will fall into recession all because of this ridiculous trade war that Trump started

The whole world knows that a tariff war doesn't work and will simply hurt the American economy

Do you think he has thought this out or just throws out tariffs with no cares what the markets may do.

I honestly don't think Trump thinks more than 2 moves ahead. Look at his idea of expelling all the Palestinians from Gaza. Surely somebody should have said to him "But Mr President, that will simply drive more people into the arms of Hamas" but nobody did because they are all too scared and simply agree with anything Trump says. It's the same with the tariffs. Most republicans think these tariffs are a terrible idea but nobody has the balls to stand up and say it.

Americans are not happy with Trumps trade wars https://www.independent.co.uk/news/worl ... 14162.html

What the fuck Trump wants to add 200% tariffs on EU alcohol, come on you are going to hurt everyone who likes a drink after work or when they go out, don't do this tariff.

The United States is suddenly looking less bubbly for European wines.

President Donald Trump on Thursday threatened a 200% tariff on European wine, Champagne and spirits if the European Union goes forward with a planned 50% tariff on American whiskey. Wine sellers and importers said a tariff of that size would essentially shut down the European wine business in the U.S."
