So I want to move the blog from the root to a subdomain, how bad is this for seo purposes.

just change the wp-config.php file and do a 301

Let me explain a thing here, forget seo and concentrate on what makes you money, seo comes after the fact. If you think you can make more money doing it, first do it. People worry far too much about seo and throw out the baby with the bath water.
