Just don't go out shopping and say it out loud or when you are getting a prostate examination by your doctor :)

There is no global sweet point for density (although an average of 2% is nice to stick with), you still need stellar content built around keywords, and that's on crawlers to determine who should be on top, relative to other niche-specific content.
But if you go overboard, stuffing your content with keywords, then it's counterproductive, so it's still important.
Different topics have different rules, if you go for a keyword like "SEO", you'll find a lot of 1st-page articles floating around 4-5% kw density, and that's perfectly acceptable for that kind of topic, the word itself has to be used so many times.
On the other hand, if you're ranking for "digital marketing", then such density wouldn't be appropriate, there are other relevant terms that have to be used throughout the text, so density there for top results is about 1-2%.
It doesn't have to be a direct ranking factor to actually matter, the whole point of density is that you sometimes should use relevant and proof terms in your content to make sense of it, which automatically lowers your percentages.
It still needs to be researched, and you should pay attention to it because it is a metric that indirectly dictates rankings.
