Brassmonkey we don't even need groups, all you need to do is ban "Bots" from reading the forum in question, assuming the goal is for search engine bots form not indexing posts in that forum. That is part of the PHPbb script.

GROUPS: click on the link in the footer of any page "GROUPS" mark as many groups you want to join, scroll down, hit the radio button, you can unsubscribe form any group by putting a mark on the right side of it and clicking "Resign" and save.



No one can access the member info unless the member :

1. In their user control panel > Profile adds any or all of these:
Facebook:
Twitter:
Skype:
YouTube:

2. Or they add it in their signatures or any other forms of contact they want shared (eg email).

3. Or they add contact information in a post they make.


For 2 simple reasons, privacy laws and preventing them getting spammed.

Groups will not work if I am thinking what you are, anyone who is a registered member can join any or all groups, but you can not stop a group from access to any forum, it has not been setup that way, and if your goal is to prevent search engines reading and indexing the posts in a certain forum the way to do it is what I mentioned, block all search bots form access to that particular forum.

That is easy too, I have already set that part up here, first you need a forum, takes 1 minute to setup, second you make membership there by approval, they apply to join and either get approved or not. Simple boss, all we need is the forum name, I'll set it up.
