Here is why I am asking, now that I have started to participate on a few forums, I wanted to add either a link or small banner to my sig, but want to find out which will get tracked more by Google.

Either one can be better than the other, but at least on forums, the SEO benefit is so low that it probably doesn't matter. But, what will matter more is having a link or banner that offers value to that forum/group of people.

A banner linked to your site is still good. It will get you name recognition and clicks.

Its the age old question. Google reads anchor text better but banners are likely to get more clicks and more user recognition

If you do use a banner then make sure you use the alt tag (although google places less emphasis on it these days because its so easy to stuff with keywords)

Also (and a lot of people overlook this) use google friendly filenames. Dont just call it img034923.jpg or whatever, give it a meaningful filename.
