Honestly it's only risky if you're doing something that you're not supposed to do. It makes some people a lot of money when done right. I send like 25,000 emails/week, and that's tiny compared to the large senders, but you have to collect, clean, send, etc constantly and stay in the inbox.

Truth be told I have no clue how to collect, lean or manage emails, all i have are contact forms on my sites and they do not generate much,so best I stay away from this type of sales marketing.

There are more ways than one to do email marketing, though. Sometimes small lists of people that subscribe to specific newsletters can help, too.
Don't buy lists, though, especially if you're starting out. People will pretend that they have gold when they're just trying to make money off newbies.
