A higher price doesn't guarantee a superior product, however a lot of times you get what you pay for. At $50 for a dedicated server (I assume fully managed of course!) I would really REALLY dig into the server specs and into the service provider.

My host is now offering dedicated as well as vps and shared hosting. Not at 50 bucks, but they do provide a great product and excellent service at a competitive rate. You can check them out here

Word. It's not that difficult to handle your own server. All you need to know you can learn online. Step by step guides written for dummies free for all. Google it, and get putty.

Not dedicated but I did get and play around with a vps for awhile. 70 GB SSD / 4 TB BW / 2.5 GB RAM / 2 IPs / 1 CPU cost $25 per year. Was perfect to play with and learn on.
