wordpress plugins
have you noticed when you add a plugin to your wordpress blog in some cases it shows up as it's own folder and in other cases it is listed under "Settings" why is that.

Different code. Like, adding in settings would be add_options_page(), and making it it's own menu would use add_menu_page() along with more code and add_submenu_page() to make more option pages using the same slug as set in add_menu_page.

I think she is asking why they use the 2 different codes, ( I think that is her question).

I'm not positive, but I think add_options_page() (the one where the options are under settings) came first, then they added add_menu_page() to make top level menu items in the dashboard, then they just kept them both.

WP can always tell developers to stick to one format, see if they listen to them.

Not like the user has any say in this. I like it when it's tucked away in the settings or tools folder unless the plugin menu contains multiple pages. I hate having things cluttered up with unnecessary menus, icons and BS.

Same, most of the time after I set up a plugin, I never have to go back to settings for anything, so tucked away is nice.
Also, a lot of my blogs use custom post types, which have their own menu, and that can get cluttered when other plugin settings are mixed in.
If the user really wants to, though, they could move where the plugin menus is, or even make new settings lol

My choice is they are all in "Settings" out of the way but it is not that big a deal.
