I know a few family members who do, they are all older than me, that might explain it.

Be careful with vitamins. There're not FDA regulated. Just about anyone an manufacture and sell them. Tests have shown that quality / dosage varies and may not be what it's supposed to be according to the label. There is a brand that does follow standards (according to their marketing anyways) but I can't think of the name right now. You'll be better off adjusting your diet to ensure you get your nutrients. Spend your money on food instead.

Vitamin D is a different story. Most people in colder climates tend to be deficient to some degree especially during the winter month. You need sun exposure and the sun needs to hit you at a specific angle. D is essential and your level most likely will be checked during routine labwork when you get a check up. If you're low you can supplement to get to where you should be. Mine's low and I been on 2000 IU of D3 for a few years to get to where I should be. I also do 1200mg calcium because I'm old as dirt and grandma doesn't wanna break a hip :)
