Ask yourself this: what's the point in having a beautiful site when no one sees it because your serp sucks?

I remind myself of this when building. I love making pretty things and it's easy to lose focus of what matters.

Btw, Google is one butt ugly site and so is Facebook. Think about it. What's your preference, parallax on your site or money in your account?

Domain, content, seo and design in that order.
Domain, content and SEO are together they are ONE thing.

Your domain is part of your SEO, so why do it first, without SEO?
Your content is part of SEO so why not SEO it as you create it. You like doing things twice that should have been done correctly the first time?

There are at least two types of design and most of you are referring to graphic design, which should only be done after you have completed everything thing else and have the time and funds to WASTE on graphic design.

Are are talking about responsive design, liquid or fluid design, or are you talking about the layout design. If you are talking about layout design, how many different designs are we talking about? Mobile, tablet, tablet landscape, desktop?

The header and footer need layout design, which includes SEO.

I bet most of you are still using responsive design that hides content instead of disables content. I seriously doubt any of you know the difference. If you do, please don't tell anyone.

FYI, Content is always first, SEO is part of creating the content.
Domain name research should be performed after SEO research is complete. Unless you want to buy 'SomethingUseless.com".
Your domain is the first part of your branding. If you have thousands to blow on ads you can buy a domain that no one knows or can remember how to spell and shove it down their throats with ads. Talk about a waste of money.

I am in the middle of project where the client and her graphics design assistant, created the graphics of the site, picked the words and content they liked, through the site up on Shopify (yuck) and then tried and tried to make sales.
They hired me ($7500) to come in and teach them what to do to makes sales on the site. The first week their sales tripled and all I did was some basic SEO. Their traffic did not increase, that ability for people to get from one page to the other increased. (FYI, going from one sale to three was only impressive to them.)

I must say they are slow as can be with modifying their content and adding content to the site. The graphics person has a stick in her ass about how the site should look and can not focus on sales. So this site is taking much more time and effort than it should.

I am 9 weeks in and the sales are over $1000 per week. (see above where I said they are slow, we are way behind schedule.) Organic traffic has increased over 300%. Google Ads spend is just over $150 per week, still waiting on their tech to put the Google conversion tracking codes live. Using only Analytics and Shopify Analytics sucks).

They sale a product that is perishable and edible. The goal is to find new customers via Facebook and Google Ads and then use Facebook and the Newsletter to bring them back again. Plus their bulk prices are way below market average. They just asked me to double the Google spend. Making a profit from the first sale is not important to them. Return customers are their main goal. They are willing to lose money on the sale.
Returning visitors are up 275%. It will be a few weeks before we see how well returning customers are working out. That is up to them and their product. Takes a while to use up their bulk product. Thus why they are working on recipes, for their weekly mailer. Hopefully people will eat up and buy more.

The growth rate of the site is a 45 degree angle, since they hired me to come in and do my version of SEO.

I spend too much time conversing with the design person about capitalization of proper names and Google policies or the alignment of the logo in the pop up or newsletter.
It is ridiculous to even focus on these things until sales are where you need them.

I left an 'S' off there company name so it would fit in the business name section of the Google Display Responsive Ads. The ad was the second best converting and had the highest CTR and they had me take it down because an 'S' was missing. WTF! FYI, I did not take it down. They can fire me!

I almost forgot. I completely changed every word in the header navigation and the designer freaked out. The average pages per session went from about 2 pages to over 6 pages per session the following day. Just from changing the text in the header navigation. Well I also added internal links to all the product pages and blog pages, so that affected it also.
Visitor can not get from one page to the other and stay in the flow of the site and be funneled towards the shopping cart now. Before unless you used the poorly worded and horribly structured header navigation, you could get stuck in the blog, or stuck in a product category, etc.

I am now on a monthly retainer of $1500 at $150 an hour. 2 hours per week (average) and up to 2 phone calls per month included.

Thought I would share these details with you, so some of you would take SEO a bit more serious and stick designers where they go. LAST!

Did I mention Organic traffic is up 300%, after only a few weeks?
