Google seems to be going more in favour of subdomains lately.
This is what seems to be the case from my experience

Directories, it helps build up the traffic and back links to the domain.
This one makes a lot of sense

May be this is the wrong way to approach it but I want to keep my server setup as simple as possible in the event I move hosts one day. So folders are tempting as opposed to subdomains.

Does google care of you have 20 blogs on one domain if they are all subdomains as opposed to having 20 individual domain names?

Still more of a fan of directories than subdomains.

You need to pay for ssl cert's fr each subdomain, so that is a consideration.

How about you tell us why you would use one over the other in particular instances.

Depends on what you're doing. Subdirectories spread out the SEO across the entire domain and will help if you're trying to boost your root domain authority. Subdomains will make SEs see your KWs as separate across multiple distinct domains.

So, let's say you're promoting a lot of different solo model blogs, then I'd go with subdirectories. But, let's say you're doing something like a wide variety of niches or something where you don't want your blogs to affect each other, then go with subdomains.

Most people like subdirectories but I prefer subdomains in some cases.

why subdomains are not as attractive to me as before Google started dinging non-SSL sites.
