when you upgrade PHP
This has me thinking from what FilmLatex posted about PHP7x , so you have scripts running fine on your server which is using an older PHP version, if you update the PHP to say 7x, will those scripts carry on working.

That entirely depends on the script ... most mainstream/very common scripts like WP, Joomla, Drupal etc will simply work (and do the required database upgrades etc without you noticing)
....but if youre running some smaller/older/less well maintained scripts they might well break
- or do harmless but annoying things like the common "deprecated error":

So uhm, depends whats on the box youre upgrading

Older scripts will not work right on a big upgrade of php.
Been there had that happen to me last year.

Upgrade your PHP and get the latest updates to your scripts, or you are going to be having problems with the scripts down the line.

Again - it depends what scripts ... big common scripts will be way ahead of you with latest php versions - if its an old/small/abandoned script you may need more plotting and planning

Sometimes older scripts are used ... because they were great - but abandoned ... like Arylia, JMB, tons of other TGP scripts etc ...
But if youre just running WP or Drupal or something like that, just upgrade PHP and baby will still live happily

Hummmm so let's take the "Chiken or egg first" scenario talk it through.
If you upgrade your script and it does not work on the latest php, and if you upgrade your php and your older scripts do not work, it's a vicious cycle.

You dont have to walk into it blind ... you can run multiple versions of PHP on the same box per domain - or even multiple per domain using htaccess if the setup allows. So, if its per domain - turn on php7, if anything breaks turn php5 back on for that domain in a 1-click Directadmin excercise ...
Or, you can figure what scripts are running and simply check (most only have a limited number per domain)
