This might be a simpleton question but how does your wordpress copy know there is an update or for that matter when there is a plugin update?

I hope this is not such a silly question, I just want to know.

don't think anybody here is that much of a wordpress expert to know how wordpress knows anything

sounds like a good question for google to inquire

that's a good techy question

there has to be some sort of stealth communication between your wp site and the wp overlord

Yeah, there's a separate one for the core, plugins, and themes.
