When I started the board back in 2004 I found a free ad management software called phpadsnew, over the years it got a couple of name changes and now it's basically the same thing called "Revive Adserver". Works perfectly and I love it.

You need an ad management software or else you will go bananas trying to hard code every banner and change it when the time comes.

I was thinking maybe people used ad management companies and just put that code on their site and hope and prayed that company rotated banners well.
for example I have http://juicyads.nude.com in my banner rotation, so they get to rotate banners, but only when I decided they get to show up.

In the other forum I go to rarely, it seems many people are using services like juicyads.nude.com as the only way to rotate their banners.

wait a minute I clicked ad management service. You mean an ad serving software on your server right, not some out sourced service or traffic broker type set up.

Good point that is how I took it when I voted.

Everyone has clicked DIY so far.

I guess I could have used three options.
software
service
diy

I thought DIY included installing software yourself.

Everyone has clicked DIY so far. I show zero results for service and 100% for DIY! If you did not click DIY, I am not seeing that.

You either pay someone else to do it ad management service
or
you do it your self DIY

ad management service could be using a service that allows you to put a script on your site and then you log into their site and manage ads.

DIY is either you manually put the ads on your site or you installed a program that allows you to put a script on your site and then log into your own management area and manage ads.
