I have mixed feelings about social sites, they do not do much for new visitors in my case but I post to build up back links,

If you are a Kim kardashian you'll get a lot of fresh traffic form posting, if you have a few hundred followers why bother.

My impression is they are good for seo and not much good for generating traffic.

why would you google your twitter posts?
Their ranking is not what you are attempting to rank.
You should look in search console and/or analytics. Check your stats their to see if and when an increase in traffic to the pages you linked to may have occurred.
This is how you know when your social media posts that link to a related page on your site have improved TRAFFIC in the search engines. Ranking is just a guide. Traffic is more important.
