Not that hard to keep up with, this is an easy task all things considered.

This thread is important, let's get it back up for everyone to see.

Thanks to Brassmonkey today for mentioning the "re=nofollow" to me regarding something.

nofollow seems to be the buzz word these days. Even more important than ever before.

For a not so smart seo type of girl, what should I concentrate on, thank you.
Well written, unique content is primary.
The proper HTML, primarily title tags, Heading tags (H1, H2, etc.)
Image size and compression. Mainly mobile friendly images that are the exact size for the theme. I try to never use images wider than 480px. (Be sure to check that the majority of your traffic is mobile or tablet first. You don't want to resize all your images if the majority of your visitors are desktop users.
Proper names, Alt text and titles for your images.
Less navigation in your header to control site flow. This helps Google determine the different areas of your site and help ease crawling and understanding of the site.
More internal links in your posts to keep the flow moving and to tell Google which pages are really related to each other.
Sitemap both for the SEs and for the visitor. Adding sitemaps for new clients has greatly increased the number of pages indexed by the SEs.

Https is becoming more prominent. I rarely see an increase in SEO ranking immediately after installing SSL. However, when combined with the above and then comparing the non SSL version of the site history to the current SSL version of the site the SEO ranking has always improved.

Meta title and descriptions. Mainly make sure there are no duplicates.
Most SEs will use your page title or H1 for your title and then the first paragraph of the page as the description. I like to have at least 3 sentences just after the H1 to ensure a good description in the SERPs/

I wrote this off the top of my head, so you other SEO people in here, please add anything I might have missed to this beginner list.

As for nofollow links, these are for links in your comments.
I suggest to start using the other Rel= as Google suggestions. Who knows how it will affect your site.
Most/many sites don't use them at all and say they do nothing. However, since most are not using them how can we know the affect?

If you like send my your main URL and I will run a report with my software and send to you. Then you can see where your current site stands.

I have taken over SEO for many sites and updated the items on the list above and greatly increased the SEO scores for each site, quickly.

Oh yea page load speed for mobile is very important, Mostly server response time.

You wrote it off the top of your head and it seems all logical advice.

Thanks, it is what I do for my non-adult job, except I usually don't write about it. Trying something new. Writing!

Something new!

I have learned that the last few updates of Google, while they barely (initialy) changed the SERPs, the changes are slowly propagating.

For now, until I have more information, let me say that you should forget everything you thought you knew about keywords, except that they are very important.

With voice and phone search greatly increasing, Google has updated how it listens to the searchers. Thus the Algorithm is starting to learn speaking patterns and writting patterns. (we are #$%@ed)

Hard for me to give an example of what you need to do now without copy and pasting some client examples.

I will try!

If you have 6 keywords/phrases that you are using for your site keywords, previously you needed those words in sentences, heading tags, titles all over the site. Almost all of them on every single page, in Alt tags for images, etc.
You needed to keep the keywords together in phrases while also not stuffing the keywords.

Now Google is picking out keywords from your sentences and paragraphs and generating what they think the keywords and most importantly key phrases are.
Google is attempting to summarize a pages content in a few words that later a person might type in or worse speak to their listening device! Like Alexa or Google search (like I have shut off on my phone cause it was always listening and sending shit to Google while running down my battery.)

Anyway,

Key phrase can now be broken up into several sentences instead of being just 2 to 4 words always stuck together.

Well #$%% (yes my mood for today!)

Something I sent to a client on Monday after reading the keyword stuffed, 3rd world written article that sucked.
Excerpt
The products descriptions on the page.

For example:
Veltis 8 Seater Acacia Wood with cement table top dining settings (This is their sentence, just randomly on the page. no image, no link.)

should be used for image caption on images that are linked to the product page.

With the current updates to how Google reads your page and then select keywords. You need to almost forget everything you thought you know about keywords. Except they are still very important.

I think this reads better.
Velist Acaica wood 8 seater dining setting with cement table top. A complete dining set with Outdoor safe table and chairs.

These two sentences along with the other text on the page allows google to determine the keywords/phrases for this page.
These are a few of their site keywords/phrases that are relevant to this new page. They sell outdoor wicker furniture.

outdoor wicker dining settings
outdoor wicker
dining settings
outdoor table
outdoor chair

These are the keywords/phrases for this page that is a new product for them.

Acaica
wood
cement table top (No one is searching for a cement table top, but I don't pick their products or keywords. I do try to guide them when their budget allows.)

I hope that you understand this example. The text will be below an image as caption and link to the exact product page.

Velist Acaica wood 8 seater dining setting with cement table top. A complete dining set with Outdoor safe table and chairs.

These two sentences along with the other text on the page allows google to determine the keywords/phrases for this page.

Many of you may have been writing like this for years. Great for you! If you have not been already gifted with Great Rankings, then you should see a slow increase to your rankings over the next few months. Unless google changes something again.

I told a client just today! Some people's writing styles fit perfectly into what google thinks it is looking for. That is why some people write a few posts and their sites jump to the top.
Other people have learned to game the system and convince google they are good articles and have then shot to the top.
Even fewer are just copying other peoples content, slightly changing it and getting to the top.

In most cases, people do not understand what the "TOP" is.
That is a completely new subject, but here is an example.

I am pretty sure that soon this wicker client will be at the "TOP" for searches with "cement table top". The only real issue with this progress is that the only people searching for that phrase will be the people in the business of selling and/or promoting cement table tops!!!

These same clients keep using external links poorly and certainly are not using and follow or no follow mark up.
Their internal links are even worse. @#$%ing linking to the homepage all the time.

I am waiting on a client to update their affiliate site to contain the proper affiliate follow mark up. Once this happens I will have an idea of how this new hint for google affects ranking.
