[BUSINESS] can hosts force you to stay with them?
My hosting account is not enough for my site, so I found one here to move to, being the honest guy I told my host last night that I will not be renewing for October and moving, they replied I have a contract and they will keep on billing my credit card until it expires on January 18th 2020. Is this common with hosts, if I do not pay they will surely switch me off, but I tell them in advance I want to leave they won't let me go.I registered the domain through them so I don't know if I can just transfer it to Godaddy and leave without problem, what you guys think I should do.

Yes if they want to be a prick and hold you to the contract you will be liable for the remaining balance. But most reputable hosts will say good luck leave and forgive the balance. A contract is a contract, I now a lot of us (myself included) don't always read the fine print when we agree to something but that is our fault.
More importantly why would you register your domains at the same place you host, I once did this 20 years ago, the host gave me shit until I could transfer them away.
Good luck

never ever register a domain with a host. ... alwats use namecheap or namesilo or godaddy or similar
i think your domain is trapped by that hosting company
you can ask your desired host to copy the site to their hosting platform
and then delete the old site ... then call your credit card company a d tell them your card was stolen and you want another card with a different number .... then the old host cant bill you any more
but you ll need new domain name if they wont transfer for you until expiration of contract... after all ... january is jusy 3 months away
or just buy more space from them until tour contract expires
not legal advice ... just my thoughts

Yep. A legal contract is binding. Why would you enter into a binding contract? What kind of hosting do you need where you could not find anything suitable without a contract? Chalk it up as a learning experience and learn from your screw ups.brt22 wrote: ↑September 20th, 2019, 10:41 amMy hosting account is not enough for my site, so I found one here to move to, being the honest guy I told my host last night that I will not be renewing for October and moving, they replied I have a contract and they will keep on billing my credit card until it expires on January 18th 2020. Good place for domain registration is namecheap.com good prices and privacy protection is always free. Might be a good idea to transfer domain as soon as you can to them or a similar place.
I don't know what hosting you need but you might want to check out my host. The link is in my sig. I picked up a VPS a couple month ago and these guys are awesome. There's no contract, backups are free, support is quick and thorough. Plus they offered the best price I could find for adult cpanel/whm VPS hosting. Their definition of managed means they actually manage, unlike some other places that think offering a novice that knows less than you do to give advice in live chat is "managed". Unless you prefer emails with canned mainly nonsense replies. I'm not going to mention names but... who's your daddy?
Also, when looking at hosts be aware that a lot of what's out there is resellers, selling you daddy's stuff
Sh*t... I didn't intend to get on a soapbox but oops there it is! Lol. To sum up, live and learn, check in to namecheap, check in to my host (link in sig).

Yes a contract is a contract but hosts are dime a dozen and there are good and bad ones, this one seems bad.
