Exactly, people need to read and research before developing reactionary opinions that prove THEY are the reason their S#$% is F&$#ed up.

now the affiliate links are not "nofollow" = spam
they are "sponsor" which does not = spam.

Read the history of nofollow on google.

Well written, unique content is primary.
The proper HTML, primarily title tags, Heading tags (H1, H2, etc.)
Image size and compression. Mainly mobile friendly images that are the exact size for the theme. I try to never use images wider than 480px. (Be sure to check that the majority of your traffic is mobile or tablet first. You don't want to resize all your images if the majority of your visitors are desktop users.
Proper names, Alt text and titles for your images.
Less navigation in your header to control site flow. This helps Google determine the different areas of your site and help ease crawling and understanding of the site.
More internal links in your posts to keep the flow moving and to tell Google which pages are really related to each other.
Sitemap both for the SEs and for the visitor. Adding sitemaps for new clients has greatly increased the number of pages indexed by the SEs.

Https is becoming more prominent. I rarely see an increase in SEO ranking immediately after installing SSL. However, when combined with the above and then comparing the non SSL version of the site history to the current SSL version of the site the SEO ranking has always improved.

Meta title and descriptions. Mainly make sure there are no duplicates.
Most SEs will use your page title or H1 for your title and then the first paragraph of the page as the description. I like to have at least 3 sentences just after the H1 to ensure a good description in the SERPs/

I wrote this off the top of my head, so you other SEO people in here, please add anything I might have missed to this beginner list.

As for nofollow links, these are for links in your comments.
I suggest to start using the other Rel= as Google suggestions. Who knows how it will affect your site.
Most/many sites don't use them at all and say they do nothing. However, since most are not using them how can we know the affect?

If you like send my your main URL and I will run a report with my software and send to you. Then you can see where your current site stands.

I have taken over SEO for many sites and updated the items on the list above and greatly increased the SEO scores for each site, quickly.

Oh yea page load speed for mobile is very important, Mostly server response time.

It' the evolution of the "no follow" happening right in front of our eyes, it has been a long time Google didn't work to improve the "no follow" link strategy, so it's over due.

What if we do not add any attributes after links
then you are asking google to determine itself what your links are.

Google track record for accuracy is POOR at best.

google updates nofollow links
