You must know the history of the marriage license to understand what is legal and not legal.
You must also understand the definition of marriage.

Marriage licenses where created so men could marry outside their race. Specifically, white men marry black women.

The marriage license has changed and been adapted since then by the Democrats to increase tax revenue.

Benefits, taxes and other services have been attached to the marriage license. No license, no benefits.
My wife and I purchases a license so the Government would stop coming after me for child support. I was living with her at the time and was giving her my entire check. They did not care and started taking money from my check and charging HER $50 per month to give it back to her. How fucked up is that? (For you minimum wage increase fanatics I was making minimum wage at the time, so $50 was a lot of food off our table.)
We spent the $25 bucks to get them off our backs. We had been legally "married" 4 years at this point. Just not licensed. FYI, this marriage for the previous 4 years was later acknowledged and confirmed in court a few years later. At the time paying $25 was easier than a court battle with DHS. We paid the "MAN" to leave us alone.. I digress.

Marriage has NOTHING to do with the Government and everything to do with family and religious traditions.
You can be married to as many people as you want to be married with/too.

MEN TO MEN, Women to Women, multiples of each etc.
You just can not have a license for it or receive benefits.

All this BS about gays getting married is really all about benefits. Gays have been getting married for years. It became main stream when they started fighting for the right to gain access to corporate and government benefits that were restricted to people with marriage licenses.

The issue was how much changing the marriage license laws was going to cost the Government and Corporations.

The Democrats did what Democrats do and jumped on the side of the fight that would give them the most votes, not what was best for the tax payer.
