It's sad to see Tata Motors who own Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) decide to cease production of the iconic Jaguar XJ the flagship car this July.
Jaguar's bread and butter was the XJ when it started up 51 years ago, I know 4 door sedans are not as popular as before and the SUV craze has taken the automotive world like wild fire. But killing off the XJ is a sign of defeat, every manufacturer has a high end model to brag about, Mercedes has the S-Class, BMW the 7 Series and Audi the 8 Series.
What does jaguar have now for a 4 door sedan, the miserable XF and the smaller XE, two boring looking cars, I said this 10 years ago when Chief designer for Jaguar, Ian Cullum redid the look of the XJ into a poorly looking design it was a big mistake. Every other car he and his team have design except for the F-Type has been boring, bland and nondescript. JLR have priced their inventory so high no wonder they lost $4 Billion dollars in one quarter.
Tata Motors was rumoured to be looking for a buyer for JLR and at one point PSA was supposedly considering a deal. When Ford bought jaguar in the 1980's they turned it around and kept the design language every Jag owner loves. Tata screwed it, honestly the cars and SUV's could pass for any Japanese or Korean brand if it was not for the badges.
What is being said in some circles is that Jaguar will launche a new design all electric for 2020, yeh right, no car company should or does discontinue their top model for a year before a new one is introduced.
It is a sad day.
The end of the Jaguar XJ

The X-Type was basically loosely based on the Ford Mondeo aka Fusion in North America, which also was the basis of the Volvo V40. Nothing to ever love. Ford owned Jaguar, Volvo and did a lot of cars based on the same platforms.
