I hate to say this but it reads like many of you are in favor of stealing content and publishing it for your own profit or just not capable of realizing the great potential these changes/new laws have for all of us.
These sites have been given permission for the past 20 plus years to violate laws that have been on the books for over a hundred years. It is about time these giants start obeying the laws like the rest of us are forced to do.
I dont think anybody here is in favour of stealing content. Pretty much every large social media biz (google, facebook, twitter, youtube etc) is campaigning against this https://www.wired.co.uk/article/what-is ... d-meme-ban

The point that these sites are making is NOT that they want to be able to post stolen content, its that its practically impossible for them to know if the content is copyrighted prior to it being posted. I could go and shoot a video right now on my phone and post it on my site (therefore I am the copyright holder) and tomorrow somebody could upload the same video to youtube and youtube would be liable for hosting my copyrighted content. How is youtube supposed to know that the video belongs to me and that I am the copyright holder ???

This is the point that google, twitter and youtube (and pretty much every other social media site) are making. You cant simply hold them responsible for whatever users upload to them. If they receive a DMCA notice about copyrighted content then they will take it down but otherwise there is no magic bullet for them to identify ALL copyrighted content that is uploaded to them. With probably 10s of millions of videos and pictures posted daily, its simply not possible to work out whats copyrighted and what isnt

If this goes through (and I doubt very much that it will) it will simply mean that social media sites will cease to operate within Europe as most wont be able to check the validity of the content being uploaded. Google has already stated that they may have to withdraw their news aggregate fees in response to this

I think most of you are missing the point.

"youtube would be liable for hosting my copyrighted content"
Yes, because now they are not, so they profit from illegal content and allow the same people to continually upload stolen content over and over. They have ZERO incentive to stop this trend.
"How is youtube supposed to know that the video belongs to me and that I am the copyright holder ???"
The same way they do now. YOU the copyright holder complain. Unless YOU file a complaint, no one is going to hold anyone accountable. Do not assume that the copyright police are doing anything unless someone complains.

The goal here is to stop / decrease the incentive of these giant companies from profiting from these illegal activities.

While the growth of stupid cat videos might be impacted for a little while on social media sites, overall the quality of content should greatly improve.
and btw FUCK social media sites. Fuck google, fuck twitter, fuck youtube

BUILD YOUR OWN DAMN SITE AND PROMOTE IT.

The way the Internet worked before Google was much better than the way it works now. Especially with Google controlling how shitting the SERPs are now.
They are the censorship giants. The leaders in the censorship movement.

Believe me when I say,
"if we do not have the technology to identify protected content, we will soon. It is not that difficult a task.

I click a button every time I upload to YouTube that identifies the status of my content.

This will impact smaller sites that steal content more than it does the big sites.
This will empower YOU and I to create more content and add it to OUR sites.
OUR sites will be more popular instead of Youtube.

This will shift the power back to the individuals that create content.

The big sites best watch out before the single small webmasters.

In all honesty that is how it has to be. Content cots money to produce.
