[BUSINESS] check your themes!

I activated a premium tube theme on one of my sites and all of a sudden ad-block zapped ads it didn't zap on any other site. When I checked source code I saw the morons named a class "sidebar-ads". I thought about fixing it but I already done a couple fixes in a child theme so I replaced the damn thing instead. I'm just glad I caught it early and didn't pay for the theme. Won it in a Twitter contest. Who the fuck does themes for compensation and uses "ads" in anything nowadays? I plan on scanning the demo source code on any themes before I use them from now on.

Anyone know what percent people with ad blocker on will turn it off to be able to view the site if it's blocked with js, or will they just go to another site?

True, but I'll bet a lot of people designing themes with labels like "sidebar-ad" are doing it because not everyone is a coder and needs things spelled out, not because they're "bad" coders.
I mean.. It was all fine until ad blockers showed up... :p

Don't know what the percentage is but I do know you can get stats on how many use ad blockers in your Google Analytics, or if you're overly inspired write them to a database.

Here is code to track events to add to Google Analytics tag (inside the <script> tags) when using my freebie plugins:

Use with Ad-Blocker Restrict

Code: Select all

if(!document.getElementById('VbatOlNCpWPT')){
  gtag('event', 'blocking_ads', {
  'event_label': 'Blocking Ads',
  'event_category': 'blocking_ads',
  'non_interaction': true
});}
Use with Ad-Blocker Alert

Code: Select all

if(!document.getElementById('zjaIKtlLcRpd')){
  gtag('event', 'blocking_ads', {
  'event_label': 'Blocking Ads',
  'event_category': 'blocking_ads',
  'non_interaction': true
});}

anyone that buys a theme they have not tested wants to do the work or they don't belong here.

Being careful on how I spend money I get the most popular ones that are free at WP myself.

Good point not all themes are good for many reasons including security and seo.

In all my time I have never had a problem with any theme, it must be my lucky stars I suppose.

Stick with themes used a lot, more people who use a theme can come across issues and report it.

I do my best not to use free themes.
I am updated a theme for a client now. She had someone build her site free through some other offer. That theme now has security issues and has not been updated in over 3 years.
If you are still using responsive themes, then you need to get with the program.. Responsive while still at the top of google search for the way to build sites has been outdated for about three years now.

The functionality in this affordable theme is what you need.
http://themify.domainsecure.com/

Unlike Divi and other responsive themes with builders which say they Disable the content for device categories when making the pages responsive. where they actually hide the content . This theme does not HIDE the content for mobile, desktop or tablet, this theme actual disables the content.

What is the difference between hide and disable.

Hidden content is still downloaded for each device category. YOU just don't see it, but it is still downloaded. Bad for your SEO.
Disabled content is NOT downloaded at all. GOOD for your SEO.

I have only updated a few sites with this theme or added the plugin to themes like Divi. However, ever site or page that I have switched to this functionality has great increased in ranking very quickly.

Check this out.

97 mobile 100 desktop

What more can I say.

Of course the more crap YOU add to the theme the slower it will become, but that is up to YOU.
How many of you test a theme before you start adding your content and functionality to it?

And the built in functionality is great.

Have not tested against ad blockers, but I run my own ad network.
