showing my ignorance, what is the difference between

for hosting

4x2TB HHD Raid 1

and

2x4TB HHD Raid 1

to me, 2x4 = 8

but don't know if there is a difference in the above, or not?

thansk!

How big is your site that you need 8TB's of storage?

With RAID1, two or more disks are mirrored to have the same information. The primary purpose of this is redundancy. Adding more than 2 disks adds redundancy, but not usable space. The amount of usable space is equal to the smallest disk size in the array, regardless of how many disks are in the array.

4 x 2TB HDD RAID1 = 2TB usable storage. The data is replicated 4x, read speeds are increased 4x, and you could survive 3 disks failing.

2 x 4TB HDD RAID1 = 4TB usable storage. The data is replicated 2x, read speeds are increased 2x, and you could survive 1 disk failing.

That directly answers your question, but below this I'll make it a little more confusing:

RAID0 adds read/write speed but increases your risk of failure with each additional drive because if any drive dies, all the data is lost. The RAID0 math is what you've described above - usable storage is #drives x size of drives.

RAID10 is a hybrid of the two. It balances performance and redundancy. It requires a minimum of 4 drives. In the example above, 4 x 2TB would be 4TB of usable space and you'd be able to survive at least one (possibly 2) drive failures before any data was lost.

There are so many raid setups I get confused myself. Let's say you have 500Gigs of data , and want a copy in case the drive fails, which raid setup is recommended.

That explanation was easy enough for even me to understand, thanks for that.

I still do not know which RAID option would be best for me , I want to have my data safe in case of a hard drive fail.
Stop looking for reps if they don't care why waste your time and traffic at their program, fuck that.

My server does not have RAID I asked my host, they said they have daily backups instead.
