what is the purpose of a website using "tags" ?

some websites use them

some websites don't

and as google is ignoring meta keywords. are tags a waste of time, or useful for search?

are they useful for seo?

I use them because they help the search spiders pick up the content and key words to crawl my sites.

I use meta-tags takes next tp no time to add to a site, it can not hurt either way.

The only ignorant people in business are the ones who dare not ask the questions. You Bill are far from an ignorant webmaster in my mind.

I ask some very obvious questions at times, but that is how I figure things out. I do not feel bad asking anything on here.

We all did at one time or another when starting up.

tags are very important.
When I take over a new website the first thing I do is add Yoast plugin and complete all the title and meta descriptions.
I can not remember the last time this process did NOT immediately (very quickly) improve the site rankings.
Google can and does ignore the title and description as it does the keywords. However, other sites use all three. Many tools use all three.

With that said.
I try to make the actual title of the page the same and the meta title or very similar.
I try to make the first paragraph of the page very similar to the meta description.
Rarely to I add the meta keywords. This only helps some tools score your pages and a few search engines still use them.

Meta is very important and useful for search optimization.

they are not set and forget.
