In simple terms a sub-domain is no different for Google than another domain

It depends if the blog is the main site.
Domain if it is and sub-domain if it is not.

I have been registering a new domain for each of my blogs. My friend said it was more effective in ranking on search engines. So will subdomains be just as okay, it will save me a lot of annual fees.
