If there is a difference between regular and video hosting, say for a tube site, I am not aware of the difference.

The most important thing to know before you start is the scalability of the service.
Second part is how small can you start (lowest fee) that will actually fun your software.
I am using Mechbunny (best tube site platform IMHO). I started with the minimum required package. After a few of my custom modifications I needed to upgrade my CPU. Click click and support upgraded it along with a small increase in monthly fee. A few months later and a few hundred thousand videos and I needed more automated backups. Click click and support upgraded it along with a small increase in monthly fee.
Some times the home page of XXX.NUDE.com seems a bit slow to me, but that is due to my changes to mechbunny causing database issues, that mechbunny and hosting support continue to repair for me. Support is king. All the other pages of XXX.NUDE.com load really fast. Even the pages with hosted videos.

Thousands of dollars each month. You could guess they don't use the free stuff and the cheap stuff.

This is what it cost me last time I took my site seriously. They are bigger, so the cost might be similar now with all the changes.
