Well it tried to index all my pages on the one blog I tried and since it was well over 2000 pages what use is it, it as a 500 page limit on the free version.

Are you seriously bitching about the limit on the free version? 500 is better than 0. You could pay for the service and remove the limit or lets see... you could code your sitemaps by hand?

Another option is to use Yoast SEO plugin. It creates your sitemaps and doesn't have a 500 limit.

There is a free simple one called something like "xml-sitemaps" or something. Worked very well for me.

Yes, a sitemap is a must.
Yes, submitting it to Google, Bing and others really does help.
