Iframes are quite handy. Frames pages are a thing of the past and there's a lack of html5 support.

If you are using it on a non production site or a proof of concept site/application then I would say go for it and use an iFrame. But if you are working on a production environment or a non proof of concept site/application then its worth putting in the extra effort to actually integrate what ever you are iframing in to your site.
You never know how secure, or what javascript whatever you are iframing in is calling. This can cause slow load times. I worked on a project a few months back that required some iFrame on a production site and some of the iframes were serving up very slow data and effecting load times of the website. If you are iframing from an external source it would be to your advantage to ask for an api to load the data in instead of iframing in a view.

Pros: very easy to implement.
Cons (im assuming the iframe is from a source you are not a part of): may not work with HTTPS, may be slow if the code running the iframe is bad, you have no control over the data being served, you have no control over security, iFrames may not be supported by browsers in the near future.

Why I use an iframe is I change the copyright date in one place and it updates across my network.

Why not use php or javascript where php isn't an option instead of an iframe?

Most of my early sites were in frames. I stopped using that technique years ago.

You could use php or if php won't work in the page you want to insert the copyright use javascript.
php code:
Code: Select all
Copyright © 2006 - <?php echo date("Y"); ?> yourdomain.comCode: Select all
Copyright © <script type="text/javascript">
document.write("2006 - "+ new Date().getFullYear());
</script> yourdomain.comThe Fourth Turning Is Here

php code:javascript code:Code: Select all
Copyright © 2006 - <?php echo date("Y"); ?> yourdomain.comChange the yourdomain.com and the from date, or remove the from date and the dash to just show current year. Auto updates current year, better than an iframe.Code: Select all
Copyright © <script type="text/javascript"> document.write("2006 - "+ new Date().getFullYear()); </script> yourdomain.com![]()

irames save time when you have a lot of sites to manage, that is why I use them.
