I agree with you. Its hard to imagine the smaller niche hosting companies still run and support actual hardware. I'm sure some do, but Im also pretty sure some just create Cloud Instances when an order for a hosting account comes in. You could have a hosting company do this and would never really know because to you it would just be a Linux server that you access even though its actually part of a larger cloud cluster.trafficseller wrote: ↑October 17th, 2018, 12:29 pmChange is hard for some to accept, the whole hosting business has been moving to cloud computing for years.
Why I use Cloud Hosting instead of Traditional hosting

I think it is all a big smoke and mirrors to sell people less than a true dedicated server because hosts can make money, fuck cloud.

I'm open to it as long as the security is good.

I can help you set up very tight security and migrate your current site to a cloud instance. Alternatively, there are a lot of resources on how to keep your server secure.

I think a dedicated server is a great option if you dont want to deal with setting things up. Purchasing a dedicated server on your own like a dell or HP server is something I would not recommend unless you are comfortable with the following.
- Port Forwarding.
- DNS
- Server configuration and maintenance.
- Security (probably one of the biggest here)
- redundancy.
However if you are a system admin and know how to set up a server and network then you can see the clear advantage to cloud computing. What happens when you need to scale? Add more resources? Spend more money? What happens when that traffic goes down? You already paid for the resources.... Now what?
With cloud computing you can pay for what you use. And make use of technologies such as LAMBDA which btw costs about 20 cents (USD) for a million requests. This means you can have an interface just like any other website, but when a user clicks on a video to stream, your servers processor and ram does not get stressed because all the heavy lifting is being done via LAMBDA on a cluster of servers. You can also create your application to auto scale. When your server is overwhelmed with traffic and requests the server can be set up to create a copy of itself and essentially create a new server to process things. Once traffic dies down the servers will top and terminate. This means you only paid for what you used and every visitor is happy your website loads fast.
Im not saying having a dedicated server is bad. Not at all, Im saying if you compare the two (dedicated server or cloud instance) there is a clear winner from an engineering standpoint. However from a non engineering standpoint sure dedicated server sounds great because you set it and forget, but scalability is hindered.

Change can be hard and scary. It's totally understandable.

For ultimate security you should get a co-located server, have your own IT's handle all the software and settings on it.

Thats a great idea, if you are not comfortable taking care of your own server security you can always have an IT company secure your cloud instance for you, or simply do a google search on how to do this yourself. Cloud computing is set up for security and redundancy at its architecture.
By keeping your code, database, and files separate from eachother you add a layer of security already.

I have one server and 2 vps accounts for seo, if a cloud host can set me up with 18 ip's on 3 different c-classes which is what i need I'll switch. I am ope to new ideas. Do you know any cloud hosts who can do this and provide 5Mps with 2 500gig drives and 8 gigs ram for $180
