what video format is popular today

I'm looking at making my videos on the sites load faster and also give surfers the most popular format out there. What format you suggest.

HTML5 supports 3 video formats: MP4, WebM, Ogg. WebM produces a smaller file size and loads fast however it's not supported by Internet Explorer or Safari and neither is Ogg. MP4 is probably the most popular format and plays on all popular browsers and mobile devices. WebM is starting to catch on and gaining in popularity. For now I would stick with MP4. You could use WebM and give MP4 as an additional source in your embed to cover browsers/devices that don't play WebM I suppose but that would require you to upload videos in both formats.
