What are your thoughts on Serverless Applications?
Last year I started developing serverless applications using LAMBDA anonymous functions within my code either using Python or Java.
What has been your experience with serverless computing/serverless applications?

Sure, I recently created an application for one of the biggest vehicle manufacturers in the U.S, In a nutshell it tracks how much you have driven and then communicates to my code the exact mileage drive where I can then see if that mileage for the vehicle matches mileage for a standard service such as oil change or breaks. If it does match then I send out a text message to the vehicle owner with an alert and a coupon to their nearest dealership.
Usually data would go to my code by hitting a server. But instead I have a lambda endpoint where I have code that processes the data and takes actions by either simply storing a mileage update in a RDS or by sending out a message. This flow is completely serverless.
I also developed a chat system platform that can be whilelabeled and use serverless lambda functions to do a lot of the work such as pushing messages to clients or pushing messages to a database.
Best example would be a mobile application where the application is installed on the customers mobile device and and logic is done using serverless lambda functions instead of calling your server side code via api or similar.

Yea having serverless functions can be very powerful for your applications. You can usually cut costs by going serverless instead of paying for a process heavy server. Its not the best option for all software but its a very powerful tool when used correctly within your infrastructure

I have created a few serverless applications, but I have also created many hybrid applications where I server a user interface and basic functionality via server like most traditional websites and then use serverless functions to do all the heavy lifting in the backend. Its pretty cheap too. AWS gives you 1 million requests free per month, so you can have you serverless function execute 1 million times per month without paying anything. Once you go over that then its .20 for an additional million requests.chilli.domains wrote: ↑October 17th, 2018, 9:10 amYou said it. I do well with it, companies are happy when I cut their server costs by changing their server side processes that takes a lot of resources, to a serverless lambda process. Recently had a non adult industry client that was paying about $1,000/mo in server fee's I changed nearly all their processes to serverless and left the UI and minor scripts on a small cloud instances, changed their database to a RDS and then changed their storage to an elastic storage with s3 and I got their monthly cost down to $170. Made a huge difference.
