I was looking at some hosting packages today and some hosts ask for a 'setup' fee. why is that.

Because they want to make money?

There's more hosts out there than you can shake a stick at. Find one that doesn't charge the fee if you don't want to pay it. Setup fee may have been common practice at one time but many hosting companies have stopped the practice to remain competitive for new business.

You can find plenty that do not, you can also ask them to wave it if they want your business. Just 'cause someone asks a price does not mean you an not negotiate the price.

That's just plain silly to charge a setup fee from a new client with so many hosting companies all looking for new business

Tell them to drop the sign up fee or you will not go with them, easy baby.

To be fair it costs them tech time to setup a server and if they migrate your existing sites over.

Most host dont charge a set up fee anymore, migration has become like a given its not even a feature, couple years back free migration was a God send.

No harm in asking, who's paying a setup fee is the real question.

Exactly, charging a setup fee is the opposite of good business hahaha a sure way to reduce your sales. too much of the competition provides it for free
