UN says breaching 1.5C warming limit is ‘imminent and unavoidable’

A new UN climate report says that the 1.5C target set by the Paris Climate Agreement is now "unachievable" and we will likely blow past it in the next few years

"According to the UNEP, the lowest overshoot scenario would keep peak warming to between 1.7 and 1.8 degrees C. However, to follow such a pathway, global greenhouse gas emissions would need to be slashed by far more than anything currently on the table. This would require an 18% cut by 2030, 45% by 2035, and 69% by 2040, relative to 2025 levels.

Meeting this lowest-possible overshoot scenario would require a tripling of renewable electricity capacity by 2035, and dramatic cuts to fossil fuels, including the phaseout of coal by 2040, the report states."

All we need to do is to come together and we can solve this, just like we did with COVID. The problem is we have climate change deniers (ie Trump) in power and they will all be gone in 10 years time when its too bloody late

That's what all climate change deniers say. Of course the world will go on, but will it be able to support 9 billion plus humans going forward living the way we do ??

Just look at 2026 as an example. Billions of people facing food shortages in southern Asia and Africa because of failed crops (driving up food prices for the rest of us). Unprecedented heatwaves across the northern hemisphere. Half of Europe was scorched by wildfires, a super charged El Nino event is now underway and don't forget that massive glacier collapse in Nepal

In the last 2 years, US emissions have surged under Trump leading to America now being the biggest polluter per capita in the world. Way ahead of China and Russia

Only a fool can deny that climate change is an existential threat to us all

Drinking water is going to become a scarcity in 50 years with global warming.

That's pretty much all they can do. The next UN Climate Change Conference (COP31) will take place in November and involves pretty much every country in the world except the United States. Unfortunately the Trump administration has cancelled ALL policies relating to clean energy and is actively pushing for more fossil fuels, including coal which is the worst of all polluting fuels.

Across the 20 industrialized nations, greenhouse emissions FELL significantly in 2025 but all of that was negated by a sharp increase in emissions from the United States

If fighting climate change wasn't difficult enough, its pretty much impossible now unless the US changes course

Of the 20 or so industrialized nations, USA is now the biggest producer of greenhouse gases per capita, nearly 3 times the global average (and that's only happened in the last 2 years since Trump cancelled all green energy plans).

China still puts out more but they have 4 times the population of the USA so their per capita output is moderate and falling
