I have said this for ever, if you do not own the dot com of a domain and start a site on any other extension you are beyond dumb there is no hope for you.
I own sponsorchat.com sponsorchat.net and sponsor.chat but I would never register and use any for a site if I did not own the .com it has always been about the dot com.

Google doesnt weight the TLD itself, so anything you pick is about trust and deliverability more than ranking. After .com we've had no trouble with .net and country codes when the site targets that country, .fr for french traffic and so on. .xxx works and reads as adult, just be aware some ad and mainstream platforms block it on sight. The ones I'd skip are the cheap new gTLDs, not bc of Google but bc spam filters and some sponsors treat them badly.

What jimp said is correct. Google doesn't weight the TLD itself but users do. Most will assume you are the dot com and that's what they will type into their browser so if you are trying to build a brand and you don't own the dot come then forget it.

The extension really is not relevant to seo but a dot com is the obvious extension to build your sites on.

Yeah the type-in thing is real. Had a .net once that did fine in search and still lost people to the .com, mails came back saying they landed on the wrong site. Ended up buying the .com later for way more than it would have cost at the start.
