I don't have a problem with tipping a waiter or waitress for good service, what i do have a problem with is the expectation that mpst have, they bring you a menu, take your order, bring your food and never come back until you ask for the check. That to me is not worth a penny in tips.
If I have to keep looking around to catch the eye of my waiter to tell him one of us on the table needs another drink or something else that is not what I call good service. My rule of thumb is a waiter should come at least twice during your meal ask if everything is alright and to see if you need anything.
The cherry on the pie is they bring over the payment terminal where it already has 18%, 22%, 25% and other on the screen for you to tap your credit card and add the tip.
If you run a restaurant, factor in the cost of labor into your prices. You don;t go to your dentist, doctor, lawyer or accountant and he hands you the bill for his or her services with a tip line. I have often said to the person at the drive thru window don't worry about the change and any franchise employee has said we can not take tips but thank you for the offer.
My last beef on the subject is when you go to take out a meal they pull that same tip thing with the payment terminal, what extra service have you done that makes you deserve a tip. I ordered online, the food is sitting there you ring up the payment. You don't see bank tellers accept a tip for taking care of your transactions.......
End of rant.

Restaurant workers live off tips, their wages are nothing to brag about.

Some places in Europe have what they call a "Cover charge" on the menu it's a set tip. I saw this on this food review channel on YT.

Tipping is optional here not expected as in some countries. If you leave 5% extra as a tip it is appreciated because most place do add a service charge to the bill.

Why are servers not paid a fair wage and have to depend on the generosity of customers. This is the real problem.

Restaurants should pay more to employees, they get away with screwing waiters with the excuse they get tips.

Our restaurant and bar workers get the legal minimum wage or more, tipping is not common unless at some fancy restaurant and then you leave 10%, no one expets a tip.
