President Trump levied 50% tariffs on 5% of Canadian goods sold to the USA

This is going to hurt Canadian business.

"WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States imposed 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian products early Saturday, and Canada said it would retaliate beginning Sept. 8 after last-ditch negotiations failed to resolve the latest strain in relations between the historic allies.

President Donald Trump's import taxes will hit about 5% of what Canada ships to the United States every year, including products ranging from hockey sticks to tongue depressors.

He disclosed that Canada had been willing to drop remaining retaliatory tariffs on steel, aluminum and autos if the United States substantially lowered its own, and to encourage provinces to restore U.S. alcohol sales.

But he said Washington's final demands went too far, saying, "They asked too much and offered too little," Carney said."

Putting aside all the reasons why tariffs do ot work and end up costing the US consumers, this is not the way to treat your neighbours, allies and friends.

This is going to hurt US businesses more

Like the rest of the world, Canada has spent the last 2 years making trade deals with China, South America and Europe. Trump is simply punishing the America people

Ottawa is hitting back.

"OTTAWA — From makeup to smartphones to kitchen appliances, the federal government is laying out its plan to hit the U.S. with dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs that will impact around 700 different American products, while also announcing supports for Canadian workers and businesses, such as temporary changes to employment insurance.

The tariffs will be imposed on $27.6 billion worth of U.S. imports with tariffs varying from 15, 25 and 50 per cent depending on the product. The levies will be effective starting Sept. 8.

The list does not include any energy-related countermeasures"

That's true but tariffs simply don't work. In fact, the US trade deficit has grown by around 17% since Trump came into office

Like any rich country, you buy a lot of stuff and adding tariffs simply means you are going to pay more for those same products. Why bother making stuff when you can get it for a quarter of the price from places like China or India ???

They're not the ones paying the tariffs ? The American consumers are the ones paying the tariffs

This is really going to hit the auto industry. Anybody who knows anything about the American auto industry supply chain knows that parts go back and forth across the border multiple times. Only now they will pick up a tariff with each crossing

Now we're in a tariffs war with Canada of all countries

https://apnews.com/live/trump-canada-ta ... 09-08-2026

"Canada struck back at U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday with tariffs on about $20 billion worth of U.S. goods, in response to the latest round of tariffs on Canada. Canada’s move to reduce economic reliance on the U.S. will test whether its economy can withstand Trump’s economic pressure and serve as a possible model for other governments."
