What alternative? SEO is a large piece of the puzzle, a necessary evil. Also, I wouldn't call slapping on a meta tag SEO. It's just a part of it. You need to keep SEO in mind throughout the process when choosing design, content, writing copy. Every step of the way you should be thinking "what does that do for SEO?". If people can't find you, nothing else you do really matters.

I'm not an expert. I hate dealing with it and I probably suck at it, but I do know it's important. Like I said, it's a necessary evil.
