Don't throw away your smart phone for now but they might evolve and become yesterdays news

"The smartphone could be on its way out.

Within the next 10 years, AI-powered wearables like smart glasses could replace smartphones as people’s primary personal devices, according to a new report from Fortune.

The prediction reflects a growing belief across Silicon Valley that today’s smartphones weren’t built for the next generation of artificial intelligence. Instead of waiting for users to open apps or type questions, future AI assistants are expected to proactively help people by seeing, hearing and responding to the world around them in real time.

Tech giants are already racing to build those devices, Fortune reports. Google and Meta are developing AI-enabled smart glasses, while OpenAI recently acquired iPhone designer Jony Ive’s hardware startup in a $6.5 billion deal to create a new family of AI consumer products.

Cristiano Amon, CEO of Qualcomm, told Fortune that smart glasses are the leading candidate to replace smartphones because they sit near a person’s eyes, ears and mouth, allowing AI to understand what users are seeing, hearing and saying. He predicted more AI wearables will begin appearing this year, with adoption accelerating over the next several years.

The technology could eventually let people ask their glasses to identify products, compare prices or answer questions about what they’re looking at without ever pulling out a phone.

The shift would rely on next-generation 6G wireless networks, but it also raises major privacy questions as future AI devices could continuously collect information from users’ surroundings.

According to Fortune, the companies that ultimately win the AI race may not simply build the best device — they’ll need to convince consumers they can be trusted with their most personal data."

Look at what happened with desk top computers where every body had one now it's laptops for everything and no one buys a desk top, it is a similar progression with mobile phones.
