Is the big one close read about the San Andreas fault being critical
Are we close to the BIG one thanks to the San Andreas fault?
"The San Andreas Fault and San Jacinto Fault Zone have reached their highest stress levels in 1,000 years, according to a study by researchers at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, leading scientists to wonder when California’s next “Big One” will occur.
The fault lines have reached “unprecedented levels,” according to the study, which was recently published in Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth. The study suggests that stress normally released in large earthquakes has continued to build as 160 years have passed since the last “major rupture.”
The study’s lead author, Liliane Burkhard, said the fault system is in a “critically loaded state.”
“Our results show that stress levels on multiple fault segments are now at or above the highest values seen in the past millennium and that the region may be capable of a large through-going rupture involving both fault systems,” Burkhard said. "

Funnily enough last weekend we were discussing how long it's been since we had a really strong shaker in the South land.

I saw a documentary a while back where they said that a major quake occurs along the San Andreas fault roughly once every 200 years. The last one was 300 years ago !
But there's a much bigger and much more dangerous fault line called the "Cascadia Megathrust Subduction Zone" which connects to the San Andreas Fault and runs 700 miles from northern California to British Columbia. This fault is capable of producing earthquakes up to 9.0 and above and is doubly dangerous because its underwater and therefore is expected to produce tsunamis of up to 100 feet high, devastating the Pacific North West. The last megathrust quake was in 1700 and scientists believe there is a 37% chance of another major quake in the next 50 years however, they also say that a major eruption in the San Andreas fault could kick off a megathrust quake in the Cascadia zone.
There..... Im sure that's cheered your day up

The more smaller quakes the less pressure builds up for the big jolt.

I have flood and earthquake insurance for my home on top of the regular fire and liability. It costs me $6900 a year but if we have a big earthquake I'll be okay.

What if the damage is so big that insurance companies file bankruptcy, what happens then?misterporn wrote: ↑June 19th, 2026, 6:11 amI have flood and earthquake insurance for my home on top of the regular fire and liability. It costs me $6900 a year but if we have a big earthquake I'll be okay.

Anyone and any company can file for bankruptcy protection but in a catastrophic event as this one the government would probably step in help people out to some degree.Dorman wrote: ↑June 19th, 2026, 8:02 pmWhat if the damage is so big that insurance companies file bankruptcy, what happens then?misterporn wrote: ↑June 19th, 2026, 6:11 amI have flood and earthquake insurance for my home on top of the regular fire and liability. Devastating earthquakes are less common than hurricanes and tornadoes, so take your pick where you would rather live. I'll stay in LA take my chances.

All those mountains and hills came from seismic activity so deal with it.You want home son top of the mountain with views they have a price.
Stop looking for reps if they don't care why waste your time and traffic at their program, fuck that.

They can not get the weekly weather forecast right you think they are reliable about the next major earthquake.
