My son drove me up the wall 8 years ago to get a mac book, I had never used one. Actually what happened was on January 1st 2008 I turned on my laptop it went crazy, my son installed "Ubuntu" on it, it worked. Then after 3 months the mother board conked out on it, that's when he drove me up the wall to spend a few bucks more get a mac, this thing has out lived every desktop and laptop I ever had. It just works. I still have it. 2 years ago he had some macbook pro or whatever it's called, he changed it after a year, I ended up with it, now I have 2 Mac's and they always start up and do their thing. One is in my bedroom and the other in the den.

@ bill build your own. I did it and it cost me way less than some major name brand with more resources

You want cheap and longevity? Not asking for much are you?

I've had luck with Toshiba in the past. I bought their laptop (I7) in 2013, upgraded it from win8 to win8.1 to win10 and it still runs without any issues. Granted I got an Alienware (Dell) in 2016 and haven't run it much since then but it still fires up and runs without issues. The battery did crap out a while ago so I have to use it plugged in unless I want to buy a new battery, which I don't. I'm tickled pink with the Alienware as well but it was pricy.

Acer laptops is one product I would never buy again. My motherboard crapped out a week after the 1 year warranty expired. My daughter had an Acer back then as well and hers ran hotter than a firecracker and kept shutting down. Plus some of the keys flew off her keyboard... lol. Was pure crap.

I used to buy cheap and fully expected to replace them in 2 years, anything over two I considered to be gravy. I didn't get much gravy... none with Acer. The Toshiba was really the first one were I splurged a little because at the time I was camming and wanted more power. If you do video/photo editing, broadcasting, gaming, etc you'll need decent power and that tends to cost. If you don't you could go cheaper but don't expect it to last forever.

A friend of mine built my 2nd computer for me using parts from tigerdirect.com and a bootleg copy of win97. I put the poor thing thru hell and back. My 1st puter was a radioshack tandy back in the 80's, pre-windows.

No different from a desktop except that you can built them sitting on the front porch ;)
If you get one, get yourself a mouse to go with it.

I just invested in a ROG GL552VW, they are made by ASUS specific for gaming, granted if your not into gaming the resources this computer offers are crazy. I've not been happier with any other new laptop or desktop. They are around $1,200 so maybe not on the cheap side but in my opinion they are worth it, updates for it are easily done and they keep your computer working great. I am whole heartedly expecting to get beyond 6 years out of it. it comes with 1tb HDD and 128SSD storage and i7 processor so for anything you might need to do, im sure it would handle it no problem, even power hungry things like lightroom and photoshop and video editors with no fail in performance.

my 2 cents, there are great computers out there, but cheap is not always great, expect to have to replace cheap in 2 or 3 years.
