"Pornhub has announced it will restrict access to its website in the UK from next month, blaming the tougher age checks which have been introduced for explicit sites.

From 2 February, only people who have previously made a Pornhub account will be able to access its content.

Aylo, Pornhub's parent company, said that updates to the UK's Online Safety Act (OSA), requiring age verification, had "not achieved its goal of protecting minors" and had "diverted traffic to darker, unregulated corners of the internet".

In October, Aylo said the law change had caused traffic to the website to fall by 77%."

I thought this might happen. The cost of doing all those age checks is simply not viable for a free site

Pay sites can just to a "safe for work" version, as we've done, but you can't really do that on a free tube site like pornhub

I wonder if more will follow

Exactly. I spoke to one of our affiliates a few months back who runs a very well known free site and gets around 100k UK visits per day, and the best price he was quoted for age verification was 11 cents per user !!

That's $11k per day just to age verify his UK users which is just not feasible. Even if say half of those users switch to VPN, that's still over $5k per day

I think the government needs to step in here and setup a free AI age verification system otherwise I can see a LOT more big free sites simply blocking the UK
