Changes coming on January 1st 2026
First important change is the minimum wage in California will go up by 40 cents to $16.90 an hour.
"California’s minimum wage will rise by 40 cents to $16.90 per hour when the calendar flips to 2026 as part of a legally mandated process set in motion nearly a decade ago. Several cities and counties will also increase their wages on Jan. 1.
In 2016, then-Gov. Jerry Brown signed a law that raised the state’s minimum wage from $10.50 to $15 per hour and required annual adjustments for inflation.
“The current rate of $16.50 per hour suggests that a minimum wage worker needs to work 98 hours per week to afford a one-bedroom rental at fair market rent in California,” according to the National Low Income Housing Coalition, as reported by CalMatters.
California is among 19 states increasing the minimum wage in 2026. Others include Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, Virginia and Washington.
The Golden State will have the fourth-highest minimum wage in the nation, behind Washington, D.C. ($17.95), Oregon ($17.13) and Connecticut ($16.94)."

Imagine you have to work 98 hours a week at $16.50 to pay for a one bedroom apartment, it's impossible to survive.

Beginning in July, streaming services would not be allowed to play ads with a louder volume than the show or movie being watched. Current FCC laws already prohibit this on television broadcasts, but that law was enacted before streaming services became popular."
Is the volume of ads that big a deal for people.
