Every time I looked on Craigslist and saw so many ads for cold calls and closers for loan mod scams, I felt like it was the end of the world. Started driving for a paratransit company instead. Despite how grueling it can be, the work helping people is much easier on the soul.

I have worked a call center before for focus groups and phone surveys. Believe it or not, campaigns have their fun moments. There are good people out there, but I had to stop after the 45 minute main auto survey came up again. It was grueling for both caller and consumer, and I couldn't do that to people.

The hardest part about telephone surveys/focus groups is when I learned about sales and cold calls, the rule is, if they say no, drop it and move on, stop using the number. That's it. You only make things worse. Move on.

But I was told "we're not sales, we need the information" and with focus groups, you typically only have a small number of phone numbers to work with. And this is part of what had me walk away. Consent was not respected by upper management at all.

What's funny is they really liked me. I was one of their better employees. I read up on techniques. Kept a mirror on hand, because smiling before a call helps with attitude going into a call. And I kept joke books around because the gig is deeply depressing and humor helps.
