New Texas law will require apps to collect and keep personal information for every download

#1

Post by TheButcher » May 25th, 2025, 5:39 pm

I am all for protecting children online, primary responsibility should lie with the parents, this law id signed goes even further, collecting and storing personal information if you download any app including the weather app is ridiculous.

"Apple CEO Tim Cook called Greg Abbott to press him to stop the state’s proposed online child safety laws, report reveals"

From that article.

"In a statement shared with the Journal and other outlets, a spokesperson said the company was “deeply concerned” about the effect of the legislation on the privacy of all its users.
Abbott has not yet stated whether he will sign the bill or not, though a spokesperson for the governor said that safety and online privacy for Texas children ‘remains a priority’ (AP)

“If enacted, app marketplaces will be required to collect and keep sensitive personal identifying information for every Texan who wants to download an app, even if it’s an app that simply provides weather updates or sports scores,” the statement said."

Do law makers ever think how bad their decisions are for other people?

That's exactly the problem. Law makers and politicians have no idea how the internet works so they come up with stupid ideas like this to protect children online. They don't want to say its down to the parents because that will loose them votes.

The age confirmation HAS to be done on the device, NOT on the web

Texas has a big illegal migrant problem and are trying to catch them. This can be a way to identify those people, who knows.
