The same reason we can not do business without taxes.
Has nothing to do with getting along.
A tariff is a tax on another country. Specified by a good they export to be imported to the taxing country.

Yes.
Automotive, construction, consumer electronics, agriculture, retail (e.g., strollers, mattresses, power tools, cookware)
Better question is why have tariffs caused the prices to increase? Followed by the clarifying question.
How often do corporations raise prices during political situations, media storms, pandemics, etc., to increase profits and deflect blame?
Frequently; corporations often use external events as cover to raise prices and boost profits, exploiting uncertainty or public focus on crises.
Did corporations’ profit growth during inflation result from raising prices and deflecting blame?
Yes, many corporations leveraged inflation narratives to justify price hikes, increasing profits while attributing rises to external factors.
Is it tariffs or corporate greed and American ignorance/complacency causing price rises?
Yes.
Why?
Tariffs directly increase costs for imported goods, but corporations often amplify price hikes beyond tariff impacts to maximize profits, capitalizing on public unawareness or acceptance of inflation narratives.
Is Trump's goal to force other countries to lower their tariffs on America?
Yes.
Why?
Trump's tariff policies aim to pressure trading partners to reduce their higher tariffs on U.S. goods, promoting "reciprocal" trade to balance trade deficits and protect American industries. He views foreign tariffs as unfair barriers, and his administration has stated that matching or exceeding these tariffs will incentivize negotiations for lower barriers, fostering fairer trade terms
Is Trump's strategy working with most countries?
Yes, but results vary.
Examples of countries lowering tariffs or negotiating reciprocal tariffs:
EU: Offered a "zero-for-zero" tariff deal on industrial goods (e.g., autos, pharmaceuticals) on April 7, 2025, to avoid higher U.S. tariffs.
Vietnam: Began trade agreement negotiations with the U.S. after a tariff pause on April 9, 2025, to secure mutual trade terms.
India: Engaged in swift trade deal talks with the U.S. post-tariff reduction to 10% on April 9, 2025, aiming for a deadline-driven agreement.
Japan: Nearing a general agreement to avoid massive U.S. tariffs.
Countries implementing reciprocal tariffs:
China: Imposed a 34% retaliatory tariff on U.S. products, escalating to 84% after U.S. tariffs rose to 125% on April 9, 2025.
EU: Approved 25% retaliatory tariffs on €21 billion of U.S. imports, effective April 15, 2025, targeting goods from U.S. red states.
Canada: Applied 25% tariffs on U.S. goods like steel and aluminum in response to U.S. tariffs, effective March 2025.
Trump's tariffs have prompted negotiations and some tariff reductions, but retaliatory tariffs from major partners like China and the EU indicate mixed success.
Success factor for Trump's tariff policy: Securing reciprocal trade agreements that lower foreign tariffs on U.S. goods while minimizing domestic price increases and retaliatory tariffs from trading partners.
Identifiable end result of a successful Trump's tariff policy:
Balanced trade agreements with lower or zero tariffs on U.S. goods globally, increased U.S. exports, reduced trade deficits, and strengthened domestic industries with minimal consumer price hikes.

We all just want fair trade and countries to follow the rules and the treaties they agreed upon.

Brilliant screw up the markets, watch hundreds of billions wiped out, throw businesses into a panic how to deal with supply chain issues in the short and long term, then roll back the tariffs.jag wrote: ↑May 12th, 2025, 7:15 amGood news the USA and China have reached an understanding to reduce tariffs by 100% for 90 days

The point is to get the market fair. Listen to Obama's and both Clinton's speeches stating they would do the same thing Trump is doing. then they got in office and did nothing. Well except accept money from China.TheButcher wrote: ↑May 12th, 2025, 12:44 pmBrilliant screw up the markets, watch hundreds of billions wiped out, throw businesses into a panic how to deal with supply chain issues in the short and long term, then roll back the tariffs.jag wrote: ↑May 12th, 2025, 7:15 amGood news the USA and China have reached an understanding to reduce tariffs by 100% for 90 days

You have to realize that workers rights and wages are not conducive to to low cost goods, Americans get paid good wages and produce high priced goods.tacnet wrote: ↑May 12th, 2025, 2:22 pmExactly. Trump got nothing for this climb down. China has not made any concessions
All that happened is Trump put the tariffs on, China fought back and so Trump took the tariffs off. In the meantime he caused chaos on the stock markets, businesses face huge uncertainty and the public don't know which way to turn
