Let think way back to before most of you even knew about the internet or domain names or computers or whatever you were doing in 93 and earlier.
When someone told you an address to go find their web site did the say.. WWW.NUDE.com, NUDE.com, or NUDE.com/some-stupid-directory
Mostly WWW was stated before all domain names.
Because people could think of WWW as world wide web. Then they could go to their desktop and try to get their dial up to work and go visit the www.domainsecure.com and register a domain.
Once people became familiar with world wide web meaning www. something .com, the WWW started being removed. Until finally many large websites, just took off the .com, also.
Then small companies did the same.
Small companies that want to be found online should still use dot com. WWW is NOT required.
Finally, WWW is a subdomain.
This subdomain was initially used in ALL web sites in the beginning.
Thus all web sites started on a subdomain, thus the subdomain came first.
