Good point but the trouble is, a lot of these weren't based on reciprocal tariffs. The White House published the formula Trump was using and it looks like this :-BarbaraCum wrote: ↑April 6th, 2025, 10:41 amhere is my thinking if the president wanted to punish countries for putting tariffs on our exports that is fine, but why target friendly countries instead of calling up their president and saying listen man you need to take off tariffs or I have no choice to add them on our end too. don't you think you need to cut friends some slack?

But if you unpick the formula above it boils down to simple maths: take the trade deficit for the US in goods with a particular country, divide that by the total goods imports from that country and then divide that number by two. That's why you see such huge tariffs on the poorest countries like Cambodia, Vietnam etc. The US buys a lot from those countries but obviously they can't afford to import a lot of goods from the USA. Not many people in Cambodia are shopping for Harley Davidsons lol
