Most military analyzers now agree that the arctic is going to become the new hot spot for global tensions due to climate change and the resources there. The melting ice cap is opening up a lot of new shipping routes and giving access to previously untapped resources
The problem with Trump's approach is that he wants it all for himself. Both Greenland and Canada are allies and quite happy to provide the US with access to the arctic but Trump simply doesn't have any concept of the value of allies.
The world is going to be a lot more dangerous place for the next 4 years !

Greenland we might sweet talk into joining us or selling out to us but Canada I doubt will become a state.

President Trump said it again yesterday
"U.S. President Donald Trump repeated his frequently-voiced desire to acquire Canada and Greenland on Thursday — this time with the leader of NATO sitting next to him.
“I think it will happen,” Trump said when asked by a reporter about the U.S. taking over Greenland during an Oval Office meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.
“I’m sitting with a man that could be very instrumental — you know Mark, we need that for international security,” he continued, turning to Rutte.
The secretary-general said he did not “want to drag NATO into” a conversation about the U.S. acquiring Greenland, but acknowledged the importance of Arctic security and northern countries working together “under U.S. leadership” to combat China and Russia."

If Trump wants access to Greenland and Canada then he already has it. Greenland already has a huge US base there and they are willing to host more US forces if asked. Same thing with Canada. There is also Sweden, Finland and Norway which are all part of NATO.
The point is, Trump doesn't need to annex these countries in order to work with them. That's the whole point of having strong global allies like NATO. Simply trying to force them to give up their sovereignty will not work

It is probably his way of negotiating a better economic and military alliance with those countries, come out swinging and settle for a deal you want.
