tacnet wrote: ↑December 8th, 2024, 7:00 pmThe way I read it is that Russia has not got any long term guarantees on its bases, only that they would not be attacked during this revolution which makes sense if you think about it because the rebels wouldn't want to provoke Russia into launching any air strikes. Much better to take out Assad and the bases will go with him.TheButcher wrote: ↑December 8th, 2024, 4:48 pmThis is not how dictators are overthrown, fast the military not putting up a fight, the leader being allowed to leave.... something smells to me. It all went too smoothly.tacnet wrote: ↑December 8th, 2024, 3:25 pm
Interesting dynamic if Russia has given Assad asylum though. I would imagine that if Russia wants to negotiate access to their naval and air bases in Syria then the rebels would demand that they turn over Assad to face justice. My guess is his days are numbered
If this could happen in Syria then you have to wonder if it could be Iran next ???
Just throwing this idea out there, Russia and Iran were the principal backers of Assad. They stepped aside, what if there was a deal done between Russia, America, turkey and Israel. Where Russia gets to keep it's bases. The very bases it was using to attack the "Terrorists" for the past 13 years. The US keeps the oil and wheat rich north, Israel takes over the security region by the Golan Heights (Which they just did today) and Turkey gets to take the areas by it's border. All four countries win out without spending any more money fighting it out. Assad well screw him he is not needed any more so we send him to Russia and he's out the way.
I do not see how the Russians ended up with security guarantees for their bases from the very people they were fighting the day after they took over.
Any thoughts on this?
On top of that if Russia is withdrawing its ships from that naval base, as has been reported, then it would suggest that they are worried about loosing it. I cant honestly see that the rebels will allow Russia to keep the same bases that have been attacking them for the last 13 years
The analysis Ive seen said that Russia has been reducing its forces in Syria over the last few years because they are needed in Ukraine and that this was the reason that the rebels decided to strike now.
I guess we will have to wait and see

The big boys sat around made a plan and agreed on a deal, this is all there is to it, we told the Russians and Turks here is the way it will be and the guy was booted out.

I dont. There is no upside in this for Russia and therefore no reason for them to make a deal. Russia has lost a major ally and its only warm-water naval base (from which its been projecting its power into North Africa). And what leverage did the US have ??? Its not as if there would have been any appetite for a new war in Syria with all that's going on in the world.TheButcher wrote: ↑December 15th, 2024, 12:17 pmI believe thatGRXlinks wrote: ↑December 12th, 2024, 8:17 amborn2bewild wrote: ↑December 11th, 2024, 9:06 amHow did it all collapse in 10 days when they were fighting for 10 plus years and he won .

To me its quite simple, Russia did not have the means or the manpower to protect Assad and the rebels knew it. That's why they chose to strike now. Russia is already having to rely on North Korean soldiers (with absolutely no battle experience) to fight for them in Kursk and for them to have a 3rd battle front in Syria was just too much
Whichever way you cut it, this is nothing but bad news for Putin and Iran
